Find a job! How to apply for a job
*Job loss is not something anyone would want, but especially in recent years, the number of unemployed people around the world has increased significantly. The effects of the economic crisis have led to a decrease in the number of jobs, an expansion of the range of candidates available as a result of restructuring and an increase in the demands of employers in relation to employees. The competition for a job is getting fiercer.
*It is very important to have accurate and complete information on alternatives and employment opportunities. This means initiating a sustained effort to go through all the sources of information in the field: the specialized press, the internet, recruitment agencies. So finding a job requires time, patience and effort. It is absolutely necessary that when choosing a job, one takes into account one's inclinations and abilities, the conditions and requirements of the desired job.
*This course is intended to be a help for job seekers and contains basic elements on how to draw up a CV, a letter of intent that we need to create in search of a job.
How and where can you get information about possible jobs (vacancies)?
1. Small advertisements are the first source of information, but there are some things that are less known about these advertisements: many job opportunities are never advertised; sometimes, when a person sees the ad, the post has been filled; The ad is seen by many people, so the competition can be very high, but you don't have to rely solely on this source of information.
2. Placement agencies are very useful if you have a good
professional training in a current field. 3. Direct contact of institutions or companies. It
is very important the ability in: presentation, manner of communication,
ability to make you pleasant, self-confidence, spontaneity. If possible, call
first to find out who is hiring. If you manage to talk on the phone with this
person, be short, polite and to the point. Another way to contact that person
is through a letter or directly (if you have very good communication skills, a
pleasant social presence). 4.
Employment and training agencies. These agencies provide all the
services and information you need to find a job.
Job search methods. Traditional and non-traditional.
1. Advertisement
The candidates will apply only to the possibilities that can be found in the written press or electronic. One of the oldest and simplest methods of searching for a job is the information from the announcements published by potential employers in numerous publications, advertising newspapers, national newspapers, economic magazines, specialized publications, etc, and they can also give ads in newspapers and specialized publications.
Information that an ad must contain:
* The exact description of the desired activity -must be in the title and "catch the eye" (bold, italic, capital letters,).
* Knowledge, skills and professional experience (eg experience in the design, installation and maintenance of automation systems in the food industry). Avoid listing all skills and knowledge, it is preferable to simply mention the important ones.
* The field of activity sought (eg I am looking for activity in publishing houses for magazines, advertising agency).
* The town and the Age-often not necessary, but still an important milestone for the employer. In principle, the younger someone is, the greater the chances of finding a new activity. In certain jobs, especially in management, we are looking for people with a certain skill, so they are older.
Many attempts to find a job, however, often fail, because those who do them do not follow the clues in the ads.
2. Employment agencies
National employment agencies are public agencies that, through their work, try to help recruit workers for vacancies made public by various employers across the country. The consulting services offered by these agencies are free of charge, they work in the interest of the community.
There are private agencies or firms that recruit candidates, but which, unlike national agencies, are paid by employers, on the one hand, and jobseekers, on the other, for you will help in finding the right candidate for a certain job.
3. Job fair
The job fair is an active measure of employment, through which the meeting with the job supply is met on a neutral ground. Thus, direct contact is made between economic agents and jobseekers. One of the activities of CENIOPs, carried out regularly in recent years, is the organization of job fairs within universities.
4. Post
Sending your CV and, more recently, e-mail to your CV and letter of intent, especially to companies that have not announced vacancies, is also a way to look for a job. The disadvantage of this method is that you may not receive an affirmative answer, as it depends largely on "luck". This is usually a waste of time and effort, which results in a vicious circle and could create the illusion of productive activity.
5. The Internet
A modern method. Obtaining and quickly understanding information is a good competitive position not only for companies, but also for "private individuals" who are looking for work. It is no coincidence that more and more people, especially the younger generations, are trying to find their dream job through the Internet, and as the number of people looking for a job online increases, so does the number of offers on the Web. It is much easier to compete for a job on the Internet. At the same time, it is very difficult to track, due to their number and variety, the posts and services published on the Internet.
In favour of their understanding, two methods are known:
a) select those companies where you would like to work and try to gather as much information about them as possible;
b) from the countless job offers you will choose the ones that are close, regardless of the company that publishes the post.
6. Networking
Networking or "network of personal contacts" is an increasingly popular notion, which indicates the establishment of personal contacts and is a very useful tool for anyone. Family members, relatives, friends, colleagues or their relationships can be very useful in finding jobs.
*Formal networking
The most vacancies are not public and that potential candidates will be found in the company's employees or in the knowledge. You need to create and maintain your personal network of relationships: keep in touch with friends, acquaintances and relatives. You can use friends, relatives and acquaintances who could help you connect with professionals in your field of interest. People you already know, even if they don't work in your field, may in turn know someone in that field.
*Professional or informal networking
Involves initiating relationships with people from a certain professional environment in which you also intend to work in the future: you attend meetings, conferences, seminars, etc. Listen carefully to what these people are talking about, and always be prepared to answer the question, It is important to describe to the people you have contacted the knowledge you have in the field, to ask their opinion about the qualifications needed to enter, to fall into that area. Ask them about new job search strategies and trends, as well as if they are aware of which companies currently employ qualified people.
7. Identifying employers
You need to identify and research potential employers that might suit your interests and abilities. Employers and company directors or even the yellow pages (yellow pages: www.yellowpages.ro) can indicate exactly the companies that would interest you. Don't forget to consider smaller companies as well. Ask the network contacts you have already formed if you know people who work for the company you are interested in and who you can call for information. You can also send letters to those companies or find out if they have vacancies. Make sure the questions you ask are short, professional, kind, and confidential.
8. Identifying trends
Many of today's jobs did not exist five or ten years ago. Try to identify what kind of career, profession could appear in the coming weeks, months or years by recognizing the factors that create and stop the existence of jobs: mergers, staff reductions, corporate relocations, demographic changes, new products, new social problems, policy, legislation, environmental challenges, as well as other changes caused by promotions, pensions, etc. Keep yourself constantly informed, from newspapers, magazines, news, etc., about the current situation regarding the new trends in the field of employment and the new types of professions that may appear in the near future.
What is the most suitable job
according to the skills you have
Many people looking for a job feel confused-they do not know where to
go and how to behave. If you do not know how to look for a suitable job, this
can be learned. It's not a disaster when you don't know how to do something. No
one was born learned, any man who knows how to do something, knows because he
learned from others or discovered through his own means and abilities. The
first thing you need to know when looking for a place to work is to know what you
are looking for. What do I want to be? What position do I want to work in? It is good to think about the
following: - what training do I have or what training can I obtain after a
training course ?; -
what professional skills are required for a certain job? The second step is that you need to
know which institutions, firms, companies or organizations can provide such
jobs. - talk to people you know or
work in the field; - read specialized magazines; - read the presentation leaflets of companies, institutions. The third step is more difficult to accomplish,
but not at all impossible: you need to discover the company or institution that
has a job vacancy such as the one you want. - you can contact the company / institution by direct visit, letter or
phone; - you have to learn to write a letter of intent, to design a resume, - know how to show up for a job interview, -
know how to write a thank you letter. 1. Apply only to jobs for which you consider yourself suitable Give up sending tens or hundreds of resumes a day. Someone might call you some day. Apply to only a few jobs a day. 2. Read the job requirements and assignments carefully Most of the candidates omit this stage or skip it superficially. This
is when you find out if that job is right for you. Read the requirements
carefully and consider whether you meet the minimum requirements. Ask yourself
a few questions: Do I want this job? Am I suitable for
him? Am I qualified for him? Give yourself these answers. If the
answer is no, you better look for another job. If the answer is yes you can
move on to the next step. 3. Find information about the company This case is valid if the name of the employer is also published.
Serious companies usually publish their names as well. Thus, do a short
research and find out more about the company: field of activity, work points,
turnover, company values, etc. Find out how many things are possible. You need
to linger on this stage for at least a few minutes. This information is
essential and will help you in the next steps.

How to participate in an interview. How
to prepare for the job interview
1. Carefully analyse the job posting-it
is
important to be able to thoroughly prepare your answers to the potential
questions of the employer. 2. Create a list with the questions
you expect to receive from the employer and another with your most important
achievements and qualities, which are not necessarily found in the CV. Start
from the list of strengths. Employers may also ask you to talk about your
weaknesses or failures and the lessons you have learned from such experiences
and you need to give honest answers that do not put you in a negative light. 3. Find out in detail about the
company's activity and job requirements. 4. Do a short rehearsal before the
interview, so that you get rid of the last emotions. Try
to adopt a natural and friendly attitude, which will help you gain the sympathy
of the interviewer and relax and turn the whole discussion into a conversation. 5. Prepare the right clothes. The
interview outfit is the office one-classic, slightly sober, in neutral colours.
The most indicated colours are black, blue and grey, while orange seems to be
the least recommended colour for the interview outfit. 6. Take an agenda and a writing tool
with you -it will be usefull during the discussion with the employer. 7.
Don't
forget to write down the coordinates of the place where the interview will take
place and a telephone number where you can call in case you get lost or you
happen to be late for the meeting, for objective reasons. 8. Be sure that you have printed a CV and a letter of intent, but also some
recommendations from former employers / collaborators. 9. Come on time-come 10 minutes before the interview, make sure you don't miss the
scheduled time. 10. Be respectful, keep eye contact, smile; 11. Listen carefully-you do not have to talk to the
interviewer, not letting him finish his questions and ideas; 12. Answer questions-there are many candidates who
answer completely different questions; but also Ask questions-both
about the role you will play if you are hired, and about the company's
long-term plans; 13. Stay away from generalities and give examples-go
from “I'm a good member of the team” to “A year ago, when I was part of team X,
I worked on project Y where I played a key role, ... "; - The day before the interview-prepare your outfit, accessories,
shoes, bag, check online or go to the address where the interview will take
place, you can review the answers to the most common questions of the
interviewers, go to bed at a decent time to be sure that in the morning of the
interview you will not be tired; -
In the morning of the interview-prepare a healthy breakfast, you
have to arrive 10-15 minutes earlier, smile, adopt a friendly attitude both
when interacting with the reception staff, hang up the phone or keep quiet
before the interview .Stages
of a Classic Interview
- A short introduction, or the moment when the interviewer and the candidate get to know each other. The latter is explained the context that led to the job competition.
- Preliminary questions-to adjust to the atmosphere and help you relax, the interviewer will ask you some introductory questions such as "Tell me something about yourself" or "Where did you find the ad for this job?";
- A few minutes for the presentation-a moment that belongs to the candidate, who now has the opportunity to introduce himself and go through a short history of his professional achievements.
- The central questions from the employer, who is now trying to test the candidate's skills and experience, the reasons why the candidate wants a new job, what made him focus on this company, etc.
- Situational questions refer to situations in the past, which the employee has successfully solved, or on the contrary, to hypothetical cases and how he would solve them now.
- Question specialist-questions involving "technical" about the field you want to work;
- Questions about the company-refers to the company's objectives, the strategy applied, what awards it received-general information that can be found on the company's website;
- Question of "brainteaser"-questions that no right or wrong answer-the interviewer wants to see how you think and how you react promptly;
- The candidate's questions conclude the job interview and are no less important than those asked by the employer. The candidate has the opportunity to stand out through some well-targeted questions, which demonstrate his interest in the company and the fact that he documented his activity before appearing for the interview.
✘ To ring your phone-turn it off or turn it off
silently; ✘ Nonverbal language-the way you hold your hands or the
way you look at the interviewer says a lot about you; be sure you don't have an
arrogant attitude; this aspect can be corrected with the help of a sample
interview, conducted with a friend; ✘ You speak ill of your former colleagues or former employer-no
matter how you got along with your former colleagues or how you left things,
don't speak ill of them and don't lie about telling the dramas of the past. Be
honest, say you didn't integrate and move on; ✘ Improper attire-human resources specialists rejected a candidate from the moment they
saw him due to the way he was dressed; ✘ Forget about asking questions about the company-you
need to ask some general questions that show the person in front of you that
you want to work there; ✘ You are too focused on the financial aspect-the
salary matters, but it is not the sure thing for which you choose to work in a
company. The relationship with colleagues, the possibilities for professional
development matter. ✘ To appear for the interview without
having previously prepared. This means knowing the most
important information about the company and the industry in which it operates
and knowing the information in your resume. Jobseekers with disabilities are certainly faced with the possibility
of revealing their disability. Usually a hotly debated topic among disability
administrations and career improvement experts. In any case, the choice to
reveal, as well as when and how, is ultimately and only yours. Persons with
disabilities are not obliged to reveal their disability unless it is possible
to directly affect their performance. If
you have a disability, you need to consider whether you can perform the
essential functions of the position you are applying for and whether you need
accommodations to be successful. Accommodation at work will be provided only
when the employee reveals his disability and request it. Before
you disclose an employer to an employer, you can prepare and reload a disclosure
script in advance so that you feel more comfortable with the disclosure
process and thus have an exact plan of what you want to say to the employer.
Your disclosure script should include: -A brief description of your disability-be brief and avoid using
technical terms that can be intimidating. -An emphasis on your job-related skills and abilities-you want to tell
your employer that you are a qualified candidate with special skills, who also
happens to have a disability -A description of the functional limitations related to your disability
that may interfere with job performance -Examples
of ways to accommodate the functional limitations of disability, such as using
an FM system, using text-to-speech software or a screen reader, or driving an
adapted car. We present an example of a disability disclosure scenario You can use this template or create your own: "I
have (give the preferred term for your disability). I have (list your key
skills / abilities) and can perform the essential functions of this trade, but
sometimes (indicate your functional limitations) may interfere with my ability
to (describe the duties you may encounter) . I meet my functional limitations
by (explain some ways in which you adapt your disability). It is useful if I
have (describe the specific accommodations you need). -
Consider developing a personal philosophy about disclosure-what does it mean to
be a person with a disability? How does it affect your life? -
Educate yourself about your disability and learn how to discuss it. -
Will I need potential medical care? -
Have I explored technology or strategies to make up for my limitations? -
Have I practices outreach with a family member, close friend, or career
professional? -
Participate in internships or work-based learning to understand the
accommodations needed and provided in a professional environment. -
Prepare for personal or potentially illegal questions about your disability
during the interview and seek advice from other people with disabilities who
have been able to find a job.JOB INTERVIEW FOR DISABLED PEOPLE
Hard-working people are often highly valued. But what are some of the
skills and qualities that employers value in workers? The director of the human
resources department of a company with 700 employees said: "What we
appreciate about an employee is his ability to communicate effectively and
collaborate." In times of crisis, employees risk being next on the list of those who
leave the company. That's why they have to prove to their bosses that they are
the best and are indispensable to the company. Human resources experts say that employees must follow a list of tips
in order not to thicken the ranks of the unemployed during the crisis. This is
exactly what it takes to keep a job: to create added value for the employer Recruiters and HR people advise employees and future employees to be as
active as possible, to do extra things without asking for extra money, not to
complain and to be more friendly. Communicates effectively - And when you want to say something,
pay attention to the way you express yourself. If you speak
clearly and loudly enough, it will certainly be understood what you say, and
your words will carry more weight. Brian, the professional adviser mentioned in
the previous article, says: "It's surprising how many people lose their
jobs not because they lack technical skills, but because they lack the ability
to communicate effectively." Be a good collaborator - Given that you spend most of your
time with colleagues, you will definitely get to know them quite well.
Therefore, you may be tempted to gossip about their mistakes and misdeeds. You
will not waste time and you will not cause unnecessary frictions between
colleagues. Be honest - Most employers "mentioned honesty and integrity among the
qualities they most look for in candidates for a particular position."
Obviously, if you're honest, you won't steal money or materials from your
employer. But you won't steal any time. A study conducted by an employment
agency indicated that an employee steals 4 hours and 15 minutes a week from
work. Be
realistic - The instability and political and social changes characteristic of
these times would inevitably cause economic instability as well. So, even if
you apply the above suggestions, you may still lose your job. You need to know very well the tasks which you must fulfill to
work. These are mentioned in the job description. Be careful - If you don't pay attention to meetings, you could lose job. You must read and respect the rules of organization and internal
order. From a professional point of view, it is essential to master the knowledge
thoroughly
in order to bring added value through the work that you perform. Always communicate any problem of a professional nature with your superiors, so that you
always know what you have to do. You immediately
contact superiors where problems arise. If you have problems at work with certain colleagues,
do
not try to do yourself justice. You risk being fired for good
reason. Try to do your job in such a way that you are not
arrogant and offend someone. Human dignity must be respected
above all else. Always try to get confirmation from your superior about what you are doing, in the
sense that he agrees with the work done. It is preferable to have his
recommendation in writing. It does not require a salary increase or promotion,
because in times of crisis, any manager of a company applies the strategy of
reducing costs. Thus, the one who should avoid straining the boss-employee
relationship is the employee. Be active and make money for the company, in the sense that the employee
must succeed in bringing the employer higher profits than the costs. In
addition, creativity, initiative and imagination will be valued even more in
crisis situations. The employee should also do voluntary work
because
the employer considers that "if you get involved in several projects, work
overtime and help your colleagues in completing tasks, show dedication." Employees
should stop complaining about the job, because “even if it's not the
brightest job you've ever had, it's not the best time to complain. Be
friendly, always smiling and joking. HR specialists say that of two
employees, equally efficient from an economic point of view, one of whom is
better emotionally integrated in the team and with a better relationship with
colleagues, and the other more isolated and withdrawn, will be preferred the
cheerful and communicative. Make your boss wonder how they survived without you
- The last thing to make sure you don't get fired is to become
indispensable to the company so they can't fire you. But it all comes down to
working in a place where you want to work while doing a job you enjoy. The
truth is, you have to be willing to do things that others out there don't do.
Being a phenomenal resource makes you irreplaceable and after that you will be
the master of your career. Always learn something new - As a professional, you need to
document yourself in your field. Subscribe to specialized publications,
newsletters, access career or profile sites, watch relevant shows. Don't wait
to be suggested to learn something new, but volunteer and share your newly
acquired knowledge with your colleagues and superiors. Thus, you can constantly
expand your knowledge and you can make sure that you have an advance over those
in the same field as you. Specialize in one of the niches of the field in which you work
- The continuous learning process will bring you new information that,
grouping them in clearly delimited categories, you can use at opportune
moments. Try to choose a specialized field and accumulate all the information
you have access to, information that you can structure in interesting and
interactive presentations and that you can share with your office colleagues. Don't be afraid to experiment- It is not enough just to be aware
of the changes in your field of activity - you also have to put them into
practice, adapt them to your company's profile and test them. The flexibility
and desire to go beyond your comfort zone will help you demonstrate that you
can adapt to any changes - both in the field and in the company. Socialize and participate in group activities
- Don't just talk to your office colleague, just the ones in the same
department as you or just your superiors. Try to make connections of
collegiality or even friendship with all the people in the company you work
for. Be sociable and participate in group activities, parties organized on
various occasions, team building or meetings. Make your presence felt in the
company. It is not enough to do your job responsibly, but you must prove that
you are a team member, who, in case of a restructuring or reorganization, can
be successfully integrated in any department. Share the results of your work to the team -
Make
evaluation documents after completing each project you coordinate and share
them with your colleagues. Thus, you keep them up to date with the evolution of
things related to you in the company, you help them in their projects with
relevant suggestions and you show, at the same time, that you are organized.
For about 20% of employers, the motivation to work in the field is extremely
important, so it is important to constantly show that what you do is what you
are passionate about. Such evaluation documents highlight your work and results
and, most importantly, your self-analysis skills and desire to improve future
performance. Be punctual - If the program starts at 9, try to arrive at this time every day, and
if you are late, make sure you do not exceed the academic quarter. Anyone can
understand that you have a worse day and that there are factors that do not
always depend on you, such as would be traffic. Also, do not try to get out of
the office faster than the required time. If you stay 5 - 10 extra minutes to
finish your work or to do something extra, the bosses will surely appreciate
and realize that you are a basic person in the company. Be open to new proposals, analyze them and make choices
based on arguments. Even if you think that something does not suit you, does
not suit your way of working or the way of working of the company, do not
refuse the proposal from the start, but come up with arguments to justify your
answer. Work constantly on your public profile- Even if you are employed in the
position you have always wanted to work in, it does not mean that you have to
put your CV in a drawer and forget it. Update your online profiles on social
networks and career portals, adding all new achievements, diplomas obtained,
coordinated projects. Demonstrate that you can adapt and learn - The
most important thing is to learn how to be "obedient". It refers to
the ability to learn from one's own mistakes. Stir it up with something and
you'll have to figure out how not to repeat the same mistake in the future. If
you don't show that you are capable of evolving, that means you are not a very
good employee and you will probably be the first to be fired when the company
has to make changes. Keep your job showing the ability to adapt and learn. Participates in trainings - Trainings organized by companies
are often seen as a reason to get out of
work. But you must know that it never hurts to learn new things; even if they
don't use you right away, they could be useful information in the long run. And
if you are willing to assimilate as much information as possible, you could get
a greater appreciation from colleagues or the manager. Start mentoring a new colleague - If you have a new colleague in the
organization, then talk to the manager about the possibility of mentoring him,
for sure, if you feel ready for it. In this way, you will gain more confidence
in yourself and you will be able to determine others to follow you. Try to be the best - Always try to know what is expected
of you, and if you are not 100% sure, ask without fear. Also, always start to
complete your tasks on time and manage it properly, without wasting time to the
detriment of the company. When you don't finish your work, talk to your boss
and give him solid arguments in this regard. However, be careful that these
situations do not recur too often. Dress appropriately - If you come to work dressed as for
the club, it is verylikely that you will receive a warning of the bosses. The
job is not a podium for fashion shows, but a place where you and your
colleagues must focus so that you can do your job as well as possible. Don't trust anyone - Try to maintain office
relationships in the most professional way possible. Do not try to make close
friends, do not discuss intimate issues with those you work with, and do not
speak ill of your bosses or colleagues, even if others do. Such a situation can
turn against you at any time. Don't waste time at the office - If you have finished all your
tasks, do not waste time on cigarettes or talking to friends on the phone. It
is best to go to the manager directly, tell him that you have finished your
work and that you could do other extra things or that you could help a
colleague. In this way, superiors will see that you are a model employee. Come up with suggestions for improvement -
When
you really want to impress your bosses, don't just focus on the tasks you have
to do. Come up with new, fresh ideas that can promote the company or stimulate
its revenue growth. Involve up a new project - A new project could change many
things in your attitude towards your job. If you feel bored, it is clear that
you need to take on new responsibilities and prove that you can do more than
that. Companies are increasingly open to such initiatives, so go for it. Make friends at work. Who has no problems and creates
them, and often the job is the chosen sector. To unload when he can't at home,
or because he gets bored. This type of people who may be your co-workers or
even employers, may try to get into your life at home, make bad jokes or other
things like that. And, friends at work can help you in such moments. Don't hide your or co-workers' mistakes. By acknowledging the mistakes and
trying to rectify them, you prove your maturity and that you care about the
organizatiON. Work. When you make an effort at work, you take care of your duties, you come
up with ideas on how you can improve a certain system, you try to help the
company to develop itself, your work is rewarded. If it is not rewarded, it
means that you are not in the right place. If you want a better job, look for it! Because the job doesn't come to
you. If you are employed and do not want to work in that company, continue to
send your CVs and exchange shifts, if possible, for interviews. If you feel
that you don't deserve something better or that you are not qualified for
something better and you get stuck on this thinking, you will definitely not be
able to change anything. Think big, because only with big dreams can you get
what you want. You don't have the skills, you can learn them, you don't have
the qualifications, you can get them, you don't have experience, you can gain
it. No matter what "NO" you encounter, you can bar it with what you
can achieve in the future. Always try to grow, to develop. After so many hours at work you
come tired, you do some work around the house, you turn on the TV or the
computer, you lie down in bed to sleep and the next day you start from the
beginning. The days off go by very quickly and you get the impression that you
haven't accomplished much. You can't recover the past time, but you can do
something more with your time in the future. When you organize yourself, you
can achieve a lot compared to the days when you don't set any goals. A day
without goals is a lost day because you don't feel their pressure and that's
why you don't even work on it.
